    Philippines gets new computer center

    STAFF WRITER WITH CNA, MANILA

A computer center donated by Taiwan to the Philippines has been inaugurated to provide more opportunities for students to learn computer science and telecommunications technology, Represen-tative to the Philippines Wu Hsin-hsing (吳新興) said on Wednesday.

Taiwan donated the center via the APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) project, which was proposed by Taiwan at the 11th APEC Economic Leaders' meeting in 2003, Wu said.

Taiwan worked with the Philippines' Commission on Information and Communications Technology to establish the center, Wu said.

The center was set up at the Lakan Dula High School in Manila to create a learning environment for students in a public school where computer facilities are insufficient, he said.

Six countries are taking part in the ADOC project -- the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Chile, Peru and Papua New Guinea -- with cooperation from Taiwan, the envoy said.

The Lakan Dula High School center is the fourth digital opportunity center Taiwan has opened in Manila, joining a training center, a community telecommunication center and an e-care center, Wu said.

The project will help the Philippines improve its technology development and nurture technology personnel, he said.

It will also help strengthen bilateral relations between Taiwan and the Philippines, Wu said.
