Chen, whose resignation as Sinopec chairman was announced in the state media late on Friday, was taken away for the probe, Beijing Business Today said, citing an unnamed industry insider.
"Chen himself was unaware [of being under investigation] before he was taken away by related agencies on Friday afternoon," the insider was quoted as saying.
An official with Sinopec's external affairs office said he only knew the resignation was due to "personal reasons."
Sinopec spokesman Chen Ge was not immediately available for comment.

The state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said on Friday Chen Tonghai had also resigned the posts of general manager and secretary of the Communist Party Committee of China Petrochemical Corporation (中國石油化工集團), Sinopec's parent company, for personal reasons.
Su Shulin (蘇樹林), who had resigned as senior vice president of PetroChina Co (中國石油天然氣) and was later appointed a senior government official of the northeastern province of Liaoning, had replaced Chen as general manager and committee secretary, the commission said.
Su has been nominated as a new candidate for a director of Sinopec's board at a board meeting Sunday, Sinopec said yesterday.

The number of pet cats in Taiwan surpassed that of pet dogs for the first time last year, reaching 1,742,033, a 32.8 percent increase from 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture said yesterday, citing a survey.
