Agency Director-General Lin Hwa-ching (林華慶) said Taiwan has nearly 70 different kinds of bamboo.
Bamboo has rapid renewability and is fast-growing, making it an ideal green strategic resource for achieving 2050 net zero targets, he said.
However, bamboo was not fully utilized as a resource over the past 30 years, which has led to underdevelopment in the workforce and in advanced technology for bamboo processing, Lin said.
From bamboo weaving to bamboo powder and bamboo fiber, bamboo applications have diversified with new technologies, he said.
The agency would continue to develop bamboo production, processing and market applications in cooperation with the industry and academia, Lin said.
The agency’s Forestry and Forest Industry Division senior technical specialist Lin Hsiang-li (林香?) said the bamboo processing industry is primarily focused on manufacturing a wide variety of household goods, such as bamboo chairs, utensils, cups and toothbrushes.
The agency would provide subsidies for the industry to purchase necessary machinery, such as bamboo splitting machines, she said.
Bamboo’s carbon-capturing capacity is greater than trees, and bamboo powder can be processed into biomass pellet fuel, Lin said.
There are about 180,000 hectares of bamboo forest nationwide, she said.
However, not all bamboo forests can easily be utilized, as many of them are privately owned or located in remote areas, Lin said.
While moso bamboo is the most widely applied bamboo variety in Taiwan, makino bamboo is known for its tasty shoots, she said.
Thorny bamboo is commonly grown in Pingtung County and used to make oyster rafts, Lin said, adding it has also been applied in making biomass pellet fuel.
The agency in March revised its regulations governing incentives for bamboo forest production and renewal.
The eligibility for incentive payments used to be limited to indigenous reservation to all bamboo forest land.
Land cultivated with economic bamboo species, including moso bamboo, makino bamboo, long-shoot bamboo, thorny bamboo and Alishan bamboo are all eligible for the incentives.
