Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) yesterday briefed her party’s Central Standing Committee regarding her scheduled visit to the US between Monday next week and June 16, saying that her purpose would be to persuade the US that the Republic of China (ROC) Constitution was a “one China” constitution that would foster stable and peaceful cross-strait relations.
The ROC Constitution is the most important defense for all Taiwanese citizens, as it upholds our democracy and has contributed to our robust economy, which aligns with international and US interests, she said.
“We would not be troublemakers and drag the US under,” she said.

To defend the liberal, rule-of-law democratic society created under the ROC Constitution in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu, the civil war must end, she said.
The ROC Constitution is a “one China” constitution under which both sides of the strait could seek peace, stability and reconciliation, agreeing to live with each other’s differences, Cheng said.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has hijacked the ROC Constitution, holds the legislature in contempt, and is assuming to make the Constitutional Court a rubber stamp of the ruling government, Cheng said.
The DPP is subtly introducing its “New Two States Theory,” which is nothing more than pro-Taiwanese independence rhetoric, causing the Constitution to function no longer as the nation’s bulwark, but rather as a vulnerability, Cheng said.
Cheng said US President Donald Trump said after his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) that he did not support nor did he wish to see “someone” adopting independence, while the summit meeting stated that “pro-Taiwan independence was the source of danger and conflict, and should be utterly eradicated.”
Cheng said she planned to visit Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and speak with think tank members, members of the US Congress and US officials during her visit, adding that she also intended to visit the overseas Taiwanese community in the US.
Meanwhile, Cheng told a radio interview on Tuesday evening that the DPP-led government lacks administrative neutrality, as it instructed the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) to ask the US side not to meet with Cheng or help arrange an itinerary for her trip.
Separately, the OCAC yesterday said that Cheng’s claims that the council told the US “not to meet with Cheng” was an act of public defamation and called for Cheng to apologize.
DPP Legislator Michelle Lin (林楚茵) said Cheng should not blame others for the obstacles that she might encounter, adding that Cheng is not visiting in an official capacity and the OCAC is not obligated to arrange her travel itinerary.
