The Ministry of National Defense’s Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School said it has received 1,200 applications so far this year, a record high for the second year in a row.
This year, graduates for the first time would be allowed to advance to the National Defense Medical University, as well as the Chung Cheng Institute of Technology and the Management College at the National Defense University, the school said.
Previously, graduates could only apply to the army’s Republic of China (ROC) Military Academy, the ROC Naval Academy, the ROC Air Force Academy and the political warfare academy, known as the Fu Hsing Kang College, based on their General Scholastic Ability Test scores, it said.

The change means students could go on to become military doctors, military prosecutors or researchers at the National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, rather than being limited to serving in combat units, it said.
The new pathways to military medical, engineering and management programs have become the biggest highlight of this year’s recruitment campaign, the school said, adding that the expansion would also help cultivate defense technology talent at an earlier stage.
Graduates who continue their studies at one of the military’s seven academies and colleges would be commissioned as second lieutenants upon graduation, with starting monthly salaries of NT$58,500, offering stable employment and promotion opportunities that have attracted increasing numbers of applicants, the school said.
Meanwhile, students receive full scholarships and monthly living stipends of more than NT$7,000, it added.
The preparatory school, as a key training ground for military officers, last year began recruiting only senior-high school students and expanded enrollment to 800 students, it said.
Recruitment teams visited 223 junior-high schools nationwide this year, including on the outlying Kinmen and Penghu counties, and Siaoliouciou Island (小琉球), as well as eastern Taiwan, school officials said.
Applications climbed to a record 1,100 last year, with most unsuccessful applicants failing medical examinations, the school said.
Among this year’s 1,200 applicants, 910 have so far passed their medical and aptitude tests, it said.
Registration remains open through Friday, it said, adding that the final total is expected to rise further.
