The Taipei Zoo yesterday afternoon found its elderly lesser anteater, Blackie, after it had been missing for a week, though the animal did not seem eager to return to its enclosure, the zoo said in a statement last night.
The zoo said that it had been searching for Blackie (黑妞) since Tuesday last week after staff discovered that the animal had escaped its enclosure on the Monday evening.
Yesterday, staff spotted Blackie crossing a zoo road, it said, adding that other staff were quickly called to help capture the anteater.

They succeeded, but not before Blackie displayed "surprising strength and vigor" while resisting capture, even scratching a staff member's hand, the zoo said.
Blackie was safely transported to the animal hospital for examination, and a preliminary check found no external injuries, the zoo said, adding that the animal would undergo further examinations after getting some rest.
During the search effort, a total of 65 staff members were deployed on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, and more than 10 people continued patrolling surrounding areas each day after that, the zoo said.
Six automated cameras and four trap cages were installed in the area, but the devices only captured footage of wild animals, including Reeves's muntjacs, crab-eating mongooses, civets and Swinhoe's pheasants, it said.
The zoo thanked the Taiwan Detection Dog Association for assisting in the search.
At one point, search dogs detected Blackie's scent in a hilly part of the zoo near the giant panda enclosure, it said.

The Philippines would likely be involved in any conflict over Taiwan due to its proximity to the democracy claimed by China, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said, reiterating a stance that risks angering Beijing. “In the Philippines, we do not have a choice because Taiwan is so close to the Philippines and we have almost 200,000 Filipino nationals living and working in Taiwan,” Marcos said in an interview with Japanese media in Manila on Monday. The Philippine leader’s comments come ahead of a state visit to Japan next week, where he is to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to discuss security
