A fire broke out at Kaofeng Hotel (高峰大飯店) in the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area at about 11pm on Tuesday, prompting more than 180 guests and staff to evacuate.
Firefighters extinguished the flames after about three hours, and no injuries were reported.
The blaze reportedly started on the third floor of the hotel and spread quickly, with thick smoke affecting the adjacent Wunsun Hotel (文山賓館).

The Chiayi County Fire Bureau is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the fire and whether it was sparked by faulty electrical wiring.
The bureau said the fire was reported at about 11pm on Tuesday, and it dispatched personnel and vehicles from 10 squads.
Firefighters found the four-story concrete building engulfed in flames and thick smoke, and extinguished the fire at 2:33am yesterday, it said.
The fire began in a storage room on the third floor used for hotel supplies, Kaofeng Hotel manager Chen Kun-mao (陳昆茂) said.
About 80 guests and staff were evacuated from Kaofeng Hotel and no one was injured, but rooms were damaged by smoke and the total property losses would be difficult to estimate, Chen said.
Among those affected were at least 11 foreign nationals, including five from Malaysia, three from Poland and three from Thailand, local media reported.
A nearby convenience store provided bottled water, instant noodles and heat packs to those affected, while a local restaurant offered shelter from the cold.
Although the neighboring Wunsun Hotel did not catch fire, its interior was damaged by high temperatures and smoke, and it would require renovations, Wunsun Hotel manager Liao Ching-tai (廖景泰) said.
The 105 people staying at the hotel on Tuesday evening were evacuated and sent to other hotels, Liao said, adding that no injuries were reported.
Police said that officers assisted with the evacuation of the two hotels, relocating many people to the Gau Shan Ching Hotel (高山青大飯店) and Alishan Gou Hotel (阿里山閣大飯店), as well as police and Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency guesthouses, police said.
Surveillance footage has been accessed to clarify the cause of the fire, police added.

The Ministry of National Defense yesterday reported the return of large-scale Chinese air force activities after their unexplained absence for more than two weeks, which had prompted speculation regarding Beijing’s motives. China usually sends fighter jets, drones and other military aircraft around the nation on a daily basis. Interruptions to such routine are generally caused by bad weather. The Ministry of National Defense said it had detected 26 Chinese military aircraft in the Taiwan Strait over the previous 24 hours. It last reported that many aircraft on Feb. 25, when it spotted 30 aircraft, saying Beijing was carrying out another “joint combat

When Paraguayan opposition lawmaker Leidy Galeano returned from an all-expenses-paid tour of six Chinese cities late last year, she was convinced Paraguay risked missing out on major economic gains by sticking with longtime ally Taipei over Beijing — a message that participants on the trip heard repeatedly from Chinese officials. “Everything I saw there, I wanted for my country,” said Galeano, a member of the newly-formed Yo Creo party whose senior figures have spoken favorably about China. This trip and others like it — which people familiar with the visits said were at the invitation of the Chinese consulate in Sao Paulo
