On the heels of Taipei City Government inking the land lease deal with Nvidia Corp for its Taiwan headquarters, Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) announced his plans to resign by the end of this month in preparation to run for New Taipei City mayor.
Lee said he has verbally informed Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) of his intent to resign by the end of the month.
Lee said he was thankful for the support shown to him by New Taipei City residents in polls and, as a New Taipei City resident, he felt he should act in response to such encouragement.

Over the course of his career, Lee said he had served as Executive Yuan secretary-general and as the deputy mayor of three special municipalities, adding that, while he strove to accomplish the mission his superiors set for him, he always had his own ideas and opinions on how to develop a city.
“I simply never thought that I would have the opportunity to put such ideas into practice,” he said.
Lee said that if he were to secure the Chinese Nationalist Party’s (KMT) nomination, he would find ways to work with Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), who has also expressed his intent to run for the mayoral position.
Huang yesterday said he respected the KMT’s internal processes and that, should Lee receive the KMT’s endorsement and run on the party ticket, he would look forward to exchanging opinions with Lee.
Huang added that they could also establish a jointly run campaign team.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) New Taipei City Council caucus convener Chen Yung-fu (陳永福) yesterday said that the DPP’s New Taipei City mayor candidate, Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧), was the better option, being more grounded in municipal affairs and knowing how to get things done.
Lee climbed to his position from the ground up, and despite his familiarity with administrative processes, New Taipei City has undergone significant changes over the past eight years, Chen said.
Separately, New Taipei City Deputy Mayor Liu Ho-jan’s (劉和然) sudden cancelation of a scheduled 5:30pm appearance at a Shulin District (樹林) Lunar New Year Lantern Festival event is suspected to be due to Lee’s announcement, pundits said.
Liu issued a statement last night saying that he had accepted New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi’s (侯友宜) suggestion that Lee should run on the KMT ticket and that he would support Lee’s bid all the way.
KMT New Taipei City Councilor Chen Wei-chieh (陳偉杰) said Lee’s experience as deputy mayor of three special municipalities made him a welcome and popular candidate, adding that he hoped the intraparty discussions would be concluded soon to clear a path for Lee to concentrate on campaign efforts.
KMT New Taipei City Councilor Chiang Yi-chen (江怡臻) said Lee was among the best candidates to help New Taipei City grow.
