A tropical depression over the sea west of the Philippines strengthened into a tropical storm named Koto at 8pm, but is not expected to have a direct impact on Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration said yesterday.
The agency said in a 9:30pm update that Koto, the 27th named storm of the year, is forecast to move in a west-northwesterly direction and would therefore not pose a direct threat to Taiwan.

As of 8pm, the center of Koto was 1,210km south of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan's southernmost point, moving northwest at 27kph, the agency said.
It had maximum sustained winds of 64.8kph near the center and a radius of 100km.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday reported the first case of a new COVID-19 subvariant — BA.3.2 — in a 10-year-old Singaporean girl who had a fever upon arrival in Taiwan and tested positive for the disease. The girl left Taiwan on March 20 and the case did not have a direct impact on the local community, it said.
