Television host Little S (小S, also known as Dee Hsu, 徐熙娣) on Friday honored her late sister, actress Big S (大S, also known as Barbie Hsu, 徐熙媛), with dark humor and gratitude during the finale award segment of the Golden Bell Awards.
“My sister and I are the two people who knew each other the best in this world,” Little S said during the ceremony. “So, I know she would want me to attend the event today to let my mom remember that even though my sister is gone, I am still here.”
Friday was Little S’ first public appearance in more than eight months since the passing of her sister in Japan earlier this year.

Big S who shot to superstardom across Asia in 2001 for her portrayal of Shancai (杉菜) in the TV series Meteor Garden (流星花園), died of pneumonia at the age of 48 after contracting influenza in February.
While one focused on acting and the other on hosting, the sisters have been known to be two peas in a pod throughout their time in the public eye.
Although many anticipated Little S’ return to the public eye on Friday, she skipped the red carpet event of the award ceremony and only took the stage as a part of the headlining presenters’ act for the Golden Bell Award for Best Host in a Variety Show, of which Little S herself was a nominee.
Little S was introduced onto the stage by her longtime cohost and friend Kevin Tsai (蔡康永), who also won the same award with her in 2005 for their talk show Kangsi Coming (康熙來了), which aired for 12 years.
After Tsai’s intro, Little S walked on stage accompanied by Ten Minutes of Love (十分鐘的戀愛), a song made popular by Little S and her late sister when they performed it as their music duo act known as A.S.O.S.
Tsai encouraged Little S to take the opportunity of them presenting on stage to speak to her late sister, just in case she would not have the chance to do so if someone else won the award she was presenting.
Instead of a long speech, Little S sang an excerpt from the A.S.O.S. song Sisters of Shiu (姐妹情深), whose lyrics were written by Big S to illustrate the bond between the two sisters.
The winner of the award was eventually revealed to be none other than Little S herself and her cohost Patrick Liu (柳柏丞) for their talk show Dee Girl’s Talk (小姐不熙娣).
Little S in her acceptance speech revealed it was the late actress who encouraged her to return to hosting after a break and made the win possible.
“This award though, Big S, sorry, I will not be dedicating to you,” she said.
“I am dedicating this to my mom, because my mom said there is a very big hole in her heart,” Little S said.
“She said that if I won today, the hole in her heart might fill up just a little. So, mom, this award is for you,” she added.
The military has spotted two Chinese warships operating in waters near Penghu County in the Taiwan Strait and sent its own naval and air forces to monitor the vessels, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said. Beijing sends warships and warplanes into the waters and skies around Taiwan on an almost daily basis, drawing condemnation from Taipei. While the ministry offers daily updates on the locations of Chinese military aircraft, it only rarely gives details of where Chinese warships are operating, generally only when it detects aircraft carriers, as happened last week. A Chinese destroyer and a frigate entered waters to the southwest
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Yilan County at 8:39pm tonight, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The epicenter was 38.7km east-northeast of Yilan County Hall at a focal depth of 98.3km, the CWA’s Seismological Center said. The quake’s maximum intensity, which gauges the actual physical effect of a seismic event, was a level 4 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, the center said. That intensity level was recorded in Yilan County’s Nanao Township (南澳), Hsinchu County’s Guansi Township (關西), Nantou County’s Hehuanshan (合歡山) and Hualien County’s Yanliao (鹽寮). An intensity of 3 was
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s comment last year on Tokyo’s potential reaction to a Taiwan-China conflict has forced Beijing to rewrite its invasion plans, a retired Japanese general said. Takaichi told the Diet on Nov. 7 last year that a Chinese naval blockade or military attack on Taiwan could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, potentially allowing Tokyo to exercise its right to collective self-defense. Former Japan Ground Self-Defense Force general Kiyofumi Ogawa said in a recent speech that the remark has been interpreted as meaning Japan could intervene in the early stages of a Taiwan Strait conflict, undermining China’s previous assumptions
Instead of focusing solely on the threat of a full-scale military invasion, the US and its allies must prepare for a potential Chinese “quarantine” of Taiwan enforced through customs inspections, Stanford University Hoover fellow Eyck Freymann said in a Foreign Affairs article published on Wednesday. China could use various “gray zone” tactics in “reconfiguring the regional and ultimately the global economic order without a war,” said Freymann, who is also a nonresident research fellow at the US Naval War College. China might seize control of Taiwan’s links to the outside world by requiring all flights and ships entering or leaving Taiwan
