Two cochairs of the US Congressional Taiwan Caucus arrived in Taipei on Wednesday on a trip intended to reaffirm support for Taiwan following its elections earlier this month.
US representatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Ami Bera were accompanied by Representative to the US Alexander Yui (俞大㵢) on their journey to Taiwan, where they are to stay until Friday.
Apart from reaffirming US support for Taiwan following the Jan. 13 election, the visit also aims to “express solidarity in their shared commitment to democratic values,” and further strengthen “the robust economic and defense relationship” between the US and Taiwan, according to a news release on Bera’s Web site.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its welcome to the lawmakers, saying that the visit at this critical moment when Taiwan is demonstrating its democratic resilience conveys the US Congress’ bilateral support for Taiwan.
The lawmakers are to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and president-elect William Lai (賴清德) during their visit, as well as vice president-elect Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) and other foreign affairs and security officials, the ministry said in a news release.
