A Hualien woman drowned Wednesday while checking a water-supply line in a mountainous part of the county, rescue officials said Thursday.
The 57-year-old woman surnamed Wu (吳) and two men on Wednesday evening at around 6:00pm went into the mountains in Wenlan Village (文蘭村) in Hualien County’s Sioulin Township (秀林鄉), to check on the cause of a disruption to water supplies in the village, the Hualien County Fire Department said.

The three became trapped when the river they were following flooded due to heavy rainfall caused by Typhoon Doksuri, it said, adding that Wu drowned after falling into the river, and the two men were rescued in the early-morning hours on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a couple trapped by a flooded river in Taitung County’s Haiduan Township (海端) on Wednesday morning have been sent supplies by rope, but would need to wait for an obstructed road to be cleared before they could be rescued, rescue officials in that county said Thursday.
