National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) has awarded Taiwan-born chief executive officer of US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) Lisa Su (蘇姿丰) an honorary doctorate, the university said yesterday.
The degree was conferred on her by NTHU president John Kao (高為元) during an award ceremony on Friday in Austin, Texas, it said in a statement.
“It is truly an honor to receive this prestigious honorary doctorate from NTHU,” it quoted Su as saying.

She said the recognition holds special meaning for her, as her father, Su Chun-hwai (蘇春槐), was also a graduate of NTHU.
“Education plays a significant role in shaping the future,” she said.
Lisa Su acknowledged “Kao and his vision, the entire NTHU administration, and faculty members and staff, whose dedication and leadership have placed NTHU at the forefront of academic excellence as well as research discovery,” the statement said.
Kao was quoted as saying that he and Lisa Su shared the same experience.
They were born in Taiwan and moved to the US at a very young age, “so he knows very well that [Lisa] Su, as a woman and an Asian, needs to work extra hard to break the glass and bamboo ceilings,” he said.
“The fact that she is now a standout leader in the semiconductor industry bears testament to her hard work,” Kao said. “[Lisa] Su is a role model for the students and faculty of NTHU, as she works super hard to become the person she is today.”
Lisa Su was born in Tainan and emigrated to the US at the age of three.
She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned her doctoral degree in electrical engineering.
Lisa Su is the 41st recipient of NTHU’s honorary doctorate degree, the school said.
Previous recipients include Nobel laureate Chen Ning-yang (李遠哲), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) and environmentalist Jane Goodall, it said.
Taiwan is to receive the first batch of Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 jets from the US late this month, a defense official said yesterday, after a year-long delay due to a logjam in US arms deliveries. Completing the NT$247.2 billion (US$7.69 billion) arms deal for 66 jets would make Taiwan the third nation in the world to receive factory-fresh advanced fighter jets of the same make and model, following Bahrain and Slovakia, the official said on condition of anonymity. F-16 Block 70/72 are newly manufactured F-16 jets built by Lockheed Martin to the standards of the F-16V upgrade package. Republic of China

A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said. The storm’s structure is relatively loose and conditions for strengthening are limited, WeatherRisk analyst Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) said on Facebook. Its path is likely to be similar to Typhoon Bebinca, which passed north of Taiwan over Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and made landfall in Shanghai this morning, he said. However, it
