The New Power Party (NPP) yesterday announced two candidates for the Nov. 26 local elections — Chu Che-cheng (朱哲成) and Lin Chih-hao (林志豪) — both of whom are former members of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP).
Asked about his decision to switch parties, Chu said he supports the NPP’s refusal to put forward any candidates implicated in criminal cases and its lack of factionalism.
The NPP represents the ideals and persistence of a true “third force,” Chu added.

Asked the same question, Lin said he made the decision to come to the NPP because he felt the TPP lacked integrity.
Chu is to run for Taoyuan city councilor, while Lin is to run for Miaoli county councilor, NPP Chairwoman Chen Jiau-hua (陳椒華) told a Taipei news conference.
Chen also announced Nancy Wang (王南昕) as the party’s nominee for Penghu County’s Magong City (馬公) councilor and Huang Chin-chi (黃金吉) as township representative for Changhua County’s Pusin Township (埔心).
The party will have three candidates running for city mayor or county commissioner, 46 candidates for city or county councilor, six candidates for township or village representative and three running for borough warden, Chen said.
“The NPP’s candidates are all young people who are driven by passion and sincerity, and are opposed to corruption. I encourage people to come out and vote for them,” she said.
Chu said the NPP had faced coercion and temptation from other parties and corporations over the years, but had not deviated from its values since its founding seven years ago.
Lin said he had been drawn into politics by the TPP, which promised integrity and an opportunity for youth participation in politics, but decided to leave over disputes, and what he saw as a lack of integrity and uprightness in its core values.
Lin said he had been inspired by the youthful NPP Miaoli County Councilor Sang Kok-ting (宋國鼎), who has fought against corruption in the county.
“There are already 112 city and county councilors who have been sued or indicted in criminal cases. Use your precious vote wisely,” Chen said.
In a separate press conference held yesterday in Kaohsiung with NPP Kaohsiung City Councilor Lin Yu-kai (林于凱), Chen criticized the Democratic Progressive Party and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) for approving amendments that allow some people serving prison terms to work outside prison.
The issue has been hotly debated in local media, as murder suspect Lin Hsin-wu (林信吾) was on such a work program when he allegedly killed two police officers in Tainan on Monday.
The Grand Hotel Taipei on Saturday confirmed that its information system had been illegally accessed and expressed its deepest apologies for the concern it has caused its customers, adding that the issue is being investigated by the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau. The hotel said that on Tuesday last week, it had discovered an external illegal intrusion into its information system. An initial digital forensic investigation confirmed that parts of the system had been accessed, it said, adding that the possibility that some customer data were stolen and leaked could not be ruled out. The actual scope and content of the affected data
A New York-based NGO has launched a global initiative to rename the nation’s overseas missions, most of which operate under the name "Taipei," to "Taiwan Representative Office (TRO)," according to a news release. Ming Chiang (江明信), CEO of Hello Taiwan, announced the campaign at a news conference in Berlin on Monday, coinciding with the World Forum held from Monday through Wednesday, the institution stated in the release. Speaking at the event, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Huang Jie (黃捷) said she believed this renaming campaign would enable the international community to see Taiwan
DO THEY BITE IT? Cats have better memories than people might think, but their motivation is based entirely around the chance of getting fed Cats can remember the identity of the people who fed them the day before, Taipei-based veterinarians said on Friday, debunking a popular myth that cats have a short memory. If a stray does not recognize the person who fed them the previous day, it is likely because they are not carrying food and the cat has no reason to recognize them, said Wu Chou Animal Hospital head Chen Chen-huan (陳震寰). “When cats come to a human bearing food, it is coming for the food, not the person,” he said. “The food is the key.” Since the cat’s attention is on the food, it
DEFENSE: The US should cancel the US visas or green cards of relatives of KMT and TPP lawmakers who have been blocking the budget, Grant Newsham said A retired US Marine Corps officer has suggested canceling the US green cards and visas of relatives of opposition Taiwanese lawmakers who have been stalling the review of a proposed NT$1.25 trillion (US$39.7 billion) special defense budget. The Executive Yuan has proposed the budget for major weapons purchases over eight years, from this year to 2033. However, opposition lawmakers have refused to review the proposal, demanding that President William Lai (賴清德) first appear before the Legislative Yuan to answer questions about the proposed budget. On Thursday last week, 37 bipartisan US lawmakers sent a letter to Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), the heads
