Taiwanese whisky maker Kavalan Distillery was one of three trophy winners in this year’s world whisky category at the International Spirits Challenge with its Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength.
Judges award trophies in each category according to the products’ “exceptional quality,” scoring them between 90 and 100 points, according to the Yilan-based King Car group, which owns Kavalan.
In addition to the world whisky trophy, Kavalan also took five gold medals for its Ex-Bourbon Oak, Podium, Solist Brandy Single Cask Strength, Solist Moscatel Sherry Single Cask Strength and Ex-Bourbon, and was short-listed for the Distiller of the Year award.
“Our full-flavored Ex-Bourbon is matured in American ex-bourbon casks, non-chill-filtered, and has vanilla, fruit and coconut highlights,” King Car President Lee Yu-ting (李玉鼎) said.
“Kavalan is such a young company, yet the outstanding quality and consistency of its whisky is impressive,” said Richard Paterson, Whyte & Mackay Distillers’ master blender and a judge at the challenge.
Kavalan’s Solist Amontillado Sherry Single Cask Strength, which won a silver medal in the world whisky category in this year’s International Spirits Challenge, was also named the World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt Whisky at this year’s World Whisky Awards.
In its 21st year, the International Spirits Challenge aims at promoting outstanding quality spirits from around the world, receiving more than 1,300 entries from about 70 nations every year.
Kavalan Distillery has been dedicated to the art of single malt whisky since 2006, the firm said.
As the world’s first subtropical whisky distiller, Kavalan Distillery is a pioneer in making whisky in a hot climate and has collected more than 180 gold awards, the company said.
At its distillery, a research and development team and a UK-trained master blender, together with an international whisky consultant, oversee the production of 5 million bottles of whisky annually, including last year’s winner of the World’s Best Single Malt Whisky award, Solist Vinho Barrique, it said.

The WHO added the BA.3.2 strain to its list of Variants Under Monitoring in December last year, but this was the first imported case of the COVID-19 variant in Taiwan, CDC Deputy Director-General Lin Ming-cheng (林明誠) said.
