Costco Wholesale Corp has stopped referring to Taiwan as a province of China on the company’s Web site and has started listing it as a separate country.
The decision came this week after Costco received a letter of complaint from Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) president Peter Chen (陳正義).
“It was simply an oversight, not any commentary on Taiwan’s status,” Costco senior vice president Patrick Callans said.
“As you probably know, we have retail locations in Taiwan and very much consider it a country,” he added.
Costco Taiwan said in a statement that it approved and respected the correction by the company’s headquarters in the US, which has moved Taiwan from the “province” list to the “country” list in its online job application system.
Washington-based FAPA — a private group representing Taiwanese Americans — learned a few weeks ago that Costco was identifying Taiwan as a province of China on its online job application system.
Chen wrote a letter of complaint to Costco to which Callans replied that after checking the third-party site that hosts Costco’s application process he found that the drop-down menu that allows applicants to choose countries where they had prior work experience did not include Taiwan.
“This oversight will be corrected,” Callans said.
Explaining the situation on its Facebook page, FAPA said it regularly writes to companies, government agencies and organizations asking them to stop referring to Taiwan as a province of China.
“Last month, we were alerted that on Costco’s online job application site Taiwan was listed under province options and was missing from country options,” FAPA said.
A FAPA staffer said that they were extremely pleased with Costco’s decision.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday reported the first case of a new COVID-19 subvariant — BA.3.2 — in a 10-year-old Singaporean girl who had a fever upon arrival in Taiwan and tested positive for the disease. The girl left Taiwan on March 20 and the case did not have a direct impact on the local community, it said. The WHO added the BA.3.2 strain to its list of Variants Under Monitoring in December last year, but this was the first imported case of the COVID-19 variant in Taiwan, CDC Deputy Director-General Lin Ming-cheng (林明誠) said. The girl arrived in Taiwan on
