New Taipei City’s Zhonghe Civil Sports Center has been nominated as a finalist in the World Architecture Festival, the world’s largest architecture event.
The Jhonghe District (中和) center, nominated in the completed civic and community buildings category, was built by the municipality’s Public Works Department and was opened last year.
Designed by architect Tseng Yung-hsin (曾永信), the exterior mimics the mountains behind it and symbolizes the speed, motion and change of sports.

Department Director Chu Ti-chih (朱惕之) said new community sports centers in the municipality have been constructed with “green building” technologies in mind.
“We built double-layered outer walls constructed from various metals that would prevent too much heat and ultraviolet light from entering the building,” Chu said, adding that the material is also pollution resistant.
“We estimate the building will last 20 years under normal environmental conditions,” he said.
Chu said the center has many facilities, including, table tennis rooms, squash courts, aerobics areas, cycling machines, rock-climbing facilities and two swimming pools — a 25m outdoor pool and an eight-lane indoor pool — and reading rooms.
“There is also a roller hockey rink in the basement of the building,” he said.
“We hope the center can attain the building of the year award — which is to be announced in November — and we hope that its success inspires more public construction projects,” Chu said.
The center is the sixth public sports center to be opened in New Taipei City.
