President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) left for Panama yesterday evening to attend the inauguration of Panamanian president-elect Juan Carlos Varela tomorrow.
Ma is also slated to visit El Salvador to meet with Salvadorean President Salvador Sanchez Ceren, who was sworn in on June 1 at an inauguration attended by Premier Jiang Yi-huah (江宜樺) as Ma’s special envoy.
On the first leg of the seven-day trip, Ma is to meet with Panamanian officials to discuss issues of mutual concern and be jointly interviewed by international media, including Agence France-Presse, The Associated Press, Deutsche Presse-Agentur and Reuters, while he is in the Central American country.
Ma and his delegation are then to depart for El Salvador early on Wednesday, where he is to meet with Ceren.
Ma also plans to visit the Women City Project — which is supported by Taiwan — to meet with women and children who have benefitted from the project.
Panama and El Salvador have diplomatic ties with the Republic of China.
This is Ma’s 10th overseas trip since taking office in May 2008.
The president was invited to Panama by Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli and Varela.
On his way back to Taiwan, Ma is to stop in San Francisco, California, on Thursday to greet expatriates living in the city, home to one of the US’ largest Chinatowns. Ma’s delegation is scheduled to make transit stops in Hawaii, with plans for a return to Taipei late on Saturday.
Minister of Economic Affairs Chang Chia-juch (張家祝) and Minister of Transportation and Communications Yeh Kuang-shih (葉匡時) are among Ma’s 81-member entourage.
