Lien and his wife have repeatedly said the wife-beating stories are false. And on Sunday Lien's wife tore into the president.
"You've got to back up what you say with evidence. He's studied law. He knows more about this than I do," she said about Chen, who was an attorney before entering politics.
But the president said he was puzzled that his remark has caused such a stir.
"I just said that my love for my wife will never change and that I've never beaten her," the president declared at a rally Sunday.
"Then someone jumps up and says that I have to apologize. What kind of world is this?" Chen said. "I went back and asked my wife if I said anything wrong and she said, `No.'"
