Anthony Edwards on Friday condemned the Dallas Mavericks to a 10th consecutive loss — their worst slump since 1998 — scoring 40 points in a convincing win for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Fresh from winning Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at last weekend’s All-Star Game in Los Angeles, Edwards also managed six rebounds, while Rudy Gobert scored a double-double, with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Down by 18 points in the second quarter, the ailing Mavericks had nearly pulled off an improbable comeback.
Dallas showed resilience to draw level at 103-103 with just under seven minutes to go, only for Edwards to take the game away from them again, with a final score of 122-111.

“We take pride in being able to win clutch games,” Edwards said. “We struggled with that last year.”
“We came out aggressive in the start, but it ended up going flat for us, and they found a run,” he said. “Basketball is a game of runs, and they played real hard. So, big shout out to those guys.”
Fourteen of Edwards’ points came in the final quarter. For the Wolves it was an eighth win in 11 games, sitting fifth in the Western Conference.
For Dallas, a 10th straight loss leaves the Mavericks marooned in 12th in the Western Conference, and outside of playoff contention. Their rookie teen phenom Cooper Flagg did not play due to a foot injury.
Elsewhere the Oklahoma City Thunder stormed back from the NBA All-Star Game break with a 105-86 win over the lowly Brooklyn Nets, consolidating their lead at the top of the Western Conference.
Having not played since Thursday last week, the Thunder were still without reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, with an abdominal strain, and star guard-forward Jalen Williams.
However, the defending NBA champions have the best defense in the league and showed their strength in depth, with half of their points coming from the bench.
Jared McCain, traded from the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this month, top-scored with 21 points and praised the Thunder’s “chemistry.”
“Me coming in, just trying to learn the defensive principles... There’s a reason why they’re so good at it,” he said.
The Cleveland Cavaliers won their seventh game on the trot, beating the Charlotte Hornets 118-113.
It extended a joint league-best hot streak that has gathered pace since the signing of former MVP James Harden earlier this month.
Harden, the NBA veteran known as “The Beard,” scored 18 points Friday, but was outshone by Donovan Mitchell’s 32, and Jarrett Allen, who managed 26 points plus 14 rebounds.
Later on Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated their local rivals the Clippers in an intense derby 125-122.
Luka Doncic scored 38 points with six rebounds and 11 assists, well supported by LeBron James, with 13 points and 11 assists.
Nikola Jokic poured in 32 points as the Denver Nuggets handed the Portland Trail Blazers a resounding 157-103 defeat.
The 54-points margin was the second-largest victory in Nuggets franchise history.
Taiwan’s Lee Hao-yu on Friday went 0-for-3 in his MLB debut for the Detroit Tigers against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, becoming the 19th Taiwan-born player to reach the big leagues. The Tigers ultimately lost 1-0 in 10 innings, ending their six-game winning streak. The 23-year-old started at third base and batted eighth for Detroit. He was promoted from Triple-A Toledo ahead of the four-game series against the Red Sox at the latter’s home stadium, replacing injured utility player Zach McKinstry. “Being right-handed, and given our schedule, I think six of the next 12 games are going to
Matheus Cunha on Saturday fired Manchester United toward the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 win at Chelsea, while Tottenham Hotspur remain in the relegation zone after twice blowing the lead to draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. Chelsea failed to take advantage of a United defense ravaged by injury and suspension as a fourth straight league defeat for the Blues left their Champions League hopes in ruins. United have missed out on the riches of Europe’s elite competition for the past two seasons, but are closing in on a return thanks to an upturn in fortunes under interim manager
A new NZ$683 million (US$404 million) stadium that was a symbol of Christchurch’s struggle to rebuild after a deadly earthquake struck the New Zealand city is to host its first match tomorrow in front of a sellout crowd. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed 185 people in February 2011 and toppled or damaged buildings, including the city’s old Lancaster Park. The stadium, which hosted international rugby and cricket, and was home to the Canterbury Crusaders, was badly damaged and never reopened. It was bulldozed in 2019 and turned into sports fields, leaving the Crusaders without a permanent home. Government funding for a new stadium was
The Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburg Penguins on Wednesday put a squeeze on the penalty box in Game 3 of their NHL playoff series — with 11 players cramped inside their designated punishment areas. Each could have snapped a team photo after a melee broke out in the second period of the Flyers’ 5-2 win over the Penguins in their Eastern Conference first-round series. “It was a party in there,” penalized Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler said. The celebration extended into the joyous locker room after the Flyers took a 3-0 series lead. Penguins forward Bryan Rust slammed Travis Konecny to the ice behind the
