Jamie Vardy on Monday struck his first brace in Serie A as US Cremonese claimed a stunning 3-1 win at Bologna and the veteran forward continued his late-career adventure in Italy.
Former Leicester City and England striker Vardy rolled back the years with two classic goals either side of halftime as promoted Cremonese, in 11th on 17 points, inflicted a first home defeat of the season on their high-flying opponents.
Bologna would have gone a point behind the division’s leading pair AC Milan and SSC Napoli with a win, but it was 38-year-old Vardy who took the glory at a wet Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

“I think we were just missing a bit of rain, this is a typical midweek in the UK,” Vardy said after Cremonese ended a three-match losing streak.
“The most important thing was getting the three points and keeping that progress going, it’s another step in the right direction,” he said. “It’s all about commitment and wanting what’s best for the club. Everyone’s on that same page and everyone’s pushing forward to make sure that come the end of the season it will have been a successful year.”
Cremonese were already leading through Martin Payero’s 31st-minute effort when Vardy struck five minutes later with a near identical goal.
Vardy was sent clean through by Federico Bonazzoli and he coolly rolled his finish through Federico Ravaglia’s legs.
Bologna thought they were back in the game when Riccardo Orsolini confidently scored a penalty deep in stoppage-time at the end of the first half, but Vardy pounced four minutes after halftime, nipping ahead of Ravaglia to meet Tomasso Barbieri’s first-time pass and take his goal tally for Cremonese to four in nine matches.
After the match head coach Davide Nicola said it was a “privilege” having Vardy in his team.
“Great players are easy to handle, they know what they’re supposed to do and they know how to do it,” Nicola said.
“They set themselves apart for their qualities as players, but also for their spirit and how they behave,” he said. “That’s how he is, he’s comfortable with who he is, good humored ... he came here with the mentality of making himself available for the team.”
Vardy joined Cremonese in September on a one-year deal with an option for another season should they manage to stay in the top flight. He has been open about his intention to have a new experience in a culture he admires with Cremonese, who are backed by local billionaire steel magnate Giovanni Arvedi.
A runner who stopped during a marathon in China to pose doing the splits and another who hoarded energy gels have been banned for two years, the local athletics association said yesterday. The incidents happened during Sunday’s marathon in Sichuan Province’s Chengdu and were widely shared online. Videos showed a female runner stopping suddenly and dropping to the ground in the splits position, holding up her arms in a heart shape as she apparently posed for a photograph. She “committed obstructive fouls during the race, affecting the safe participation of other runners,” the Sichuan Athletics Association said in a statement, which identified
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli yesterday vowed to “keep raising the bar” after winning the Japanese Grand Prix to become the youngest driver in Formula One history to lead the championship standings. The 19-year-old Italian took advantage of a mid-race safety car to jump into the lead after a dreadful start from pole position, crossing the line ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Antonelli’s Suzuka victory came two weeks after the first grand prix win of his career in China, and sent him top of the championship standings after three races, nine points ahead of team-mate George Russell. Mercedes are struggling to
Teng Kai-wei, the only Taiwanese player on an opening-day roster in this year’s Major League Baseball (MLB) season, took his first win of the year with the Houston Astros in his season debut. Teng entered in relief in the top of the fifth inning against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, with the Astros trailing 5-0. He pitched 2-1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, as Houston scored 11 runs during his outing to snatch an 11-9 comeback victory. The win is the Astros’ first of the season and the third of Teng’s MLB career. “It’s my first time pitching for the Astros, so
Workers are hammering, cranes are swinging and seats are being bolted into place — but the clock is ticking. Mexico City’s famous Azteca stadium, reborn as Estadio Banorte, is in a frantic race to be ready for its grand reopening on Saturday. Drone footage showed crews installing seats and attaching the new stadium name to the facade, with cranes looming overhead 48 hours before the gates are due to open for a high-profile friendly between Mexico and Portugal. For residents, the breakneck pace of construction has done little to inspire confidence. “I know they are working practically seven days a week, 24 hours
