Phil Foden on Saturday spared Manchester City’s blushes after the Premier League title challengers blew a two-goal lead in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Leeds United, while Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank’s problems mounted in a 2-1 defeat to Fulham.
Pep Guardiola’s side were in danger of losing more ground in the title race following a second-half collapse at the Etihad Stadium.
Foden and Josko Gvardiol put City two up before the interval, but third-bottom Leeds hit back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha.

Foden clinched a nerve-jangling victory that lifted City into second place, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
It was a much-needed win after consecutive defeats against Newcastle United the previous weekend and Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Tuesday last week.
“It was a relief,” Guardiola said. “The game was not perfect in the first half, but it should be over with the chances we had. Football is emotions. We conceded the second and after we made a step-up. In the end it’s the quality of Phil.”

City had made their worst start to a campaign for five years and their second-worst under Guardiola, but they took just 59 seconds to move in front as Foden fired a close-range strike in off the bar.
Leeds had no answer to City’s slick start and Gvardiol looked to have put the hosts in complete control with a tap-in from Nico O’Reilly’s header in the 25th minute.
Calvert-Lewin made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, reducing the deficit with a clinical finish after pouncing on Matheus Nunes’s woeful pass inside the City area in the 49th minute.
Leeds equalized in the 68th minute when Nmecha’s penalty — awarded for Gvardiol’s foul on Calvert-Lewin — was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma before the forward recovered to score from the rebound.
In stoppage-time, Foden cleverly made room in the area for an ice-cool finish as Guardiola breathed a sigh of relief.
At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Frank’s men made a disastrous start as Kenny Tete put Fulham ahead before Harry Wilson’s superb strike punished a calamitous blunder from goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Tottenham were booed off at halftime and although Mohammed Kudus pulled one back after the interval, there were more jeers at the final whistle.
With only three wins in their last 13 games in all competitions, Tottenham have slumped to 10th place.
Frank slammed the Tottenham fans who booed Vicario.
“I didn’t like that our fans booed at him. They can’t be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you’re on the pitch and we do everything we can to perform. It is OK that they are frustrated, because we haven’t won at home for a long time. We all badly want to win so I’m fine with them booing after the game, but during the game I hope it was one incident and it never happens again. That is unacceptable in my opinion,” he said.
Vicario apologized for the error, saying that he understood the fans’ frustrations.
“The booing is part of football. I’m a big man. I’m quite old. We cannot be influenced by situations in the stand. Fans have the right to do what they think,” he said. “We apologize for the defeat. It’s painful.”
Newcastle celebrated boss Eddie Howe’s 48th birthday with a 4-1 rout of Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The first away league win since April 7 was the ideal present for Howe, whose side made an explosive start when Malick Thiaw headed home from Lewis Miley’s corner after just 52 seconds. It was the fastest goal in the Premier League this season.
Brentford striker Igor Thiago reached 11 league goals this season as his double fueled a 3-1 win against second-bottom Burnley in west London.
Sunderland climbed to fourth place after fighting back from two goals down to beat AFC Bournemouth 3-2 at the Stadium of Light.
Wilyer Abreu watched the ball leave the park and tossed his bat high in the air. His Venezuela teammates streamed out of the dugout in celebration. The comeback was on and the win over the reigning World Baseball Classic (WBC) champion Japan was within reach. Japan, their 11-game WBC winning streak on the line, held a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning of Saturday’s thrilling quarter-final matchup when Abreu put his team ahead with the biggest swing of the game: a three-run shot off Hiromi Itoh that sent the loanDepot Park crowd into a passionate roar and helped seize Venezuela’s 8-5
A BREATHLESS BATTLE: France clinched the championship in a vicious back-and-forth match with England, denying Ireland the title by just a few points France won back-to-back Six Nations titles after beating England 48-46 on a last-second penalty-kick by Thomas Ramos in a thriller for the ages on Saturday. England scored their seventh try in the 77th minute and converted for 46-45. If the score held for a few more minutes, Ireland would have been crowned the champion. But France pressed yet again with 14 men, lost possession, regained it, and earned two simultaneous penalties after the fulltime siren. Captain Antoine Dupont debated with referee Nika Amashukeli where the penalty spots were. Ramos, who did not miss a goal-kick all night, finally lined up his seventh
Home runs are greeted with a celebratory shot of espresso and the donning of an Armani jacket. Victories are marked with bottles of red wine while the soaring voice of opera singer Andrea Bocelli echoes through the locker room. Welcome to baseball, Italian-style. Written off as 80-1 underdogs before the World Baseball Classic started, Italy’s fairytale tournament has carried them all the way to today’s (Taipei time) semi-finals in Miami against Venezuela. On Saturday, Italy — who scored a stunning upset of a star-studded US lineup during the pool phase — kept their unbeaten campaign alive with a nail-biting 8-6
Kimi Antonelli became Formula 1’s second-youngest race winner with a composed drive to victory for Mercedes in an eventful Chinese Grand Prix yesterday. The 19-year-old Italian was the youngest pole position starter and briefly lost the lead to Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari at the start, but retook it soon after and was in control after that. “We did it! We did it!” Antonelli shouted to his team on the radio amid laughs and whoops. It was another 1-2 finish for Mercedes to start the season as Antonelli’s teammate George Russell came through a battle with both Ferraris to finish second. Lewis Hamilton was
