Taiwanese shuttler Shen Yan-ru on Friday clinched a silver medal after losing to her South Korean opponent in the badminton singles at the Deaflympics in Tokyo.
Shen, who had rallied to defeat Austria’s Katrin Neudolt in the women’s singles semi-finals, competed in the gold medal match with a leg injury.
In the final, Shen lost the first game 13-21 to Park Min-kyeong, but held her ground to win the second 21-16, leveling the match.

However, she was unable to overcome her opponent’s defense in the deciding game, falling 12-21, but still secured a silver medal for Taiwan.
After the singles match, the Taiwanese shuttler teamed up with Fan Jung-yu to compete in the women’s doubles bronze medal match later the same day, but they lost to their South Korean opponents 18-21, 13-21.
Achieving her best result at the Deaflympics, Shen told reporters after the match that she really loves badminton and thanked her coach, the badminton team and Taiwanese supporters.
The team event is to take place today, she said, asking everyone to continue cheering for the Taiwanese team.
Also on Friday, Taiwanese shuttler Cheng Chen-ding lost the men’s singles bronze medal match to Hong Kong’s Lau Chun-hei.
Although he did not reach the podium, Cheng reached his first Deaflympics semi-finals, setting a new milestone for Taiwanese men’s badminton players with hearing impairments.
