Taiwanese badminton players on Sunday dominated on the final day of the Yonex Sydney International by claiming all five titles, with Sung Shuo-yun winning the women’s singles and doubles.
A week after upsetting former world No. 1 Carolina Marin in the semi-finals at the Yonex Canada Open and achieving a career-best second place in a BWF Super Series event, world No. 58 Sung did not surrender a single game in the tournament until losing the first game in the final against compatriot Chen Su-yu.
Undeterred by her 17-21 loss, Sung outplayed Chen to win the last two games 21-16, 21-14 in 58 minutes.

The win was huge for Sung as it put an end to a nearly three-year title drought after she won her first women’s singles international title at the FZ Forza Norwegian International in 2019.
After a short break, Sung and partner Yu Chien-hui beat Taiwanese duo Chang Ching-hui and Yang Ching-tun to take the women’s doubles title 21-16, 21-11.
In the men’s singles final, Lin Chun-yi beat Singapore’s Jia Wei Joel Koh 21-11, 12-21, 21-10.
It was Lin’s third consecutive title, after winning the Monnis Mongolia International Challenge and Yonex Belgian International. He is on a 16-match winning streak.
Brothers Lee Fang-jen and Lee Fang-chih took the men’s doubles title, while Chen Xin-yuan and Yang Ching-tun won the mixed doubles.
The Sydney International is part of the BWF’s Future Series, the lowest tier of tournament on the professional badminton tour, where younger players try to accumulate ranking points to compete at higher levels.
Taiwan’s top male badminton player, Chou Tien-chen, on Saturday bowed out in the men’s singles semi-finals at the Thailand Open after losing in straight games to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn. The world No. 6 Chou, seeded fourth at the Super 500 tournament, lost to the world No. 2 Thai 21-7, 21-19 in 53 minutes. The victory improved Vitidsarn’s head-to-head record against Chou to 3-5. Jannik Sinner has his eyes on a first Roland Garros title after winning the Italian Open on Sunday to claim a record-extending sixth consecutive Masters 1000 tournament victory. World No. 1 Sinner beat Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 to complete the “Golden Masters” by winning all of the ATP’s top-ranked events, in the process becoming the first Italian men’s champion in Rome since Adriano Panatta 50 years ago.
