Space may be silent, but it isn’t scentless. According to Marina Barcenilla, a space scientist and fragrance designer, different celestial bodies give off a surprising range of smells. For example, Jupiter has cloud layers filled with chemicals like ammonia and sulfur, which could smell like cat urine or rotten eggs. Deeper layers, those closer to the planet’s core, might smell oily and garlicky due to phosphorus and tholins, complex organic molecules that can smell like gasoline.
Barcenilla, who recreates cosmic scents for exhibitions, says these smells provide clues about the composition of planets and moons. For instance, the atmosphere of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is believed to smell like a mix of bitter almonds, petrol, and rotten fish. Other planets and moons have been described as emitting odors that smell like gunpowder or burning plastic.
Astronauts have also reported distinctive smells during space missions. Helen Sharman, the UK’s first astronaut, recalls a strong metallic scent inside the spacecraft after spacewalks. Scientists believe this comes from atomic oxygen reacting with materials on spacesuits, which produces ozone, a sharp smell commonly noticed after thunderstorms.

For technology adopters looking for the next big thing, “agentic AI” is the future. At least, that’s what the marketing pitches and tech industry T-shirts say. What makes an artificial intelligence product “agentic” depends on who’s selling it. But the promise is usually that it’s a step beyond today’s generative AI chatbots. Chatbots, however useful, are all talk and no action. They can answer questions, retrieve and summarize information, write papers and generate images, music, video and lines of code. AI agents, by contrast, are supposed to be able to take actions autonomously on a person’s behalf. If you’re confused, you’re not alone.
A document long considered an unofficial copy of the “Magna Carta” has been identified as a rare original issued by King Edward I in 1300. Tucked away in Harvard Law School’s library, the manuscript was acquired in 1946 for a mere US$27.50. Medieval history professors from King’s College London used ultraviolet light and spectral imaging to analyze the faded text. They found that the handwriting, wording, and word order perfectly match those of the six other surviving charters from that year. The Magna Carta was the first document to formally assert that the king is subject to the law. It remains a
With their round bodies, big ears, and cute name, pikas are often called the “real-life Pikachu.” Though often mistaken for rodents, pikas are actually close relatives of rabbits and hares. Pikas typically grow about to 20cm in length, with short limbs and no visible tail. They live in high-altitude regions across North America and Asia, where freezing temperatures and rocks define their world. Luckily, their dense fur helps them survive the cold in these extreme environments. Pikas are known for their calls, which sound surprisingly loud for their size. Their calls resemble the high-pitched cry of a lamb, only much sharper
