To protest the National Taichung Girls’ Senior High School’s unreasonable regulations on clothing, the school’s students got together and wore shorts to school last year. Their success has been emulated by many other high school students. Taipei’s Jingmei Girls High School has also launched a campaign to demand that the school abolish regulations on shoes and socks. On Monday last week, students supporting scrapping the regulations posted a video they made on Facebook to voice their stance — “Only we can decide our appearance.”
The school’s regulations on shoes and socks stipulate that the students wear shoes that are at least 75 percent white with socks that are at least ankle high.
In a February report by the Humanistic Education Foundation, a Jingmei Girls High School student it interviewed said, “the fact is, many students do not have white shoes before they enter this school, so they have to buy them especially. It’s difficult to find white shoes that look good, which makes shopping for them really difficult. It gets really embarrassing, because sometimes the logo on the shoes means that they don’t fit in with the regulations. And students in other schools can wear whatever shoes they want.”

Jingmei Girls High School students also posted their demands and reasoning on the Internet in full, with the hope that the school can abolish regulations on shoes and socks within a semester, allowing students the liberty to choose their shoes and socks and to review the established regulations on school uniform. They hope that the school will also set up a discussion mechanism on school codes so that uniform regulations are more in line with what current students want.

It graced statues, colored coffins, and decorated artifacts. It is Egyptian blue, the world’s oldest-known synthetic pigment born in ancient Egypt. Despite its name, it is not limited to a single hue. It ranges from deep blue to greenish tones, often glowing with an almost unearthly brilliance. __1__ In response, the ancient Egyptians developed a synthetic alternative. Not only was it visually striking, but it was also more affordable than imported indigo or natural lapis lazuli. Traces of the pigment have been discovered far beyond Egypt, from wall paintings in Pompeii to tiles in Mesopotamia. However, Egyptian blue began to fall

Contrary to popular belief, glass bottles may pose a greater microplastic risk than plastic ones. A recent study found that beverages stored in glass bottles can contain up to 50 times more microplastic particles than those in plastic containers. Researchers traced most of the contamination to the paint on the outside of the metal caps. The particles found in the drinks matched the cap’s coating in both color and composition. Experts suggest the issue may result from microscopic scratches that form as caps rub against each other during transport or storage. Such scratches can damage the painted coating, leading
