It graced statues, colored coffins, and decorated artifacts. It is Egyptian blue, the world’s oldest-known synthetic pigment born in ancient Egypt. Despite its name, it is not limited to a single hue. It ranges from deep blue to greenish tones, often glowing with an almost unearthly brilliance.
__1__ In response, the ancient Egyptians developed a synthetic alternative. Not only was it visually striking, but it was also more affordable than imported indigo or natural lapis lazuli. Traces of the pigment have been discovered far beyond Egypt, from wall paintings in Pompeii to tiles in Mesopotamia. However, Egyptian blue began to fall out of use during the time of the Roman Empire. Eventually, the formula for making it was forgotten.
Centuries later, scientists made a surprising discovery. __2__ The long-wavelength light is invisible to the naked eye but detectable under heat or through specialized cameras. This feature opens doors for modern applications such as anti-counterfeiting inks, fingerprint detection, or even medical imaging.

__3__ The team tested 12 experimental compositions using varying combinations of crystalline silicon dioxide, copper, calcium, and sodium carbonate. These mixtures were heated at around 1,000°C for hours to replicate the intense conditions likely used by ancient artisans. The result was a glassy, blue substance known as frit. Once cooled, it could be ground into a fine powder for use as paint or glaze.
Both the raw materials and the carefully controlled environment give the pigment its unique colors and near-infrared emission. __4__ A slow cool-down resulted in a deep blue, while rapid cooling produced a grayish-green. Once buried in the ruins, Egyptian blue has now been revived and reimagined for the modern world.

Nestled in the mountain region of northern Taiwan lies a small village that was once bustling due to a thriving coal industry, only to later gain fame for an entirely different reason — cats. This is Houtong Cat Village (猴硐貓村), located in Ruifang District, New Taipei City. Traditional Coal Mining and Village Transformation Houtong was originally known as “Monkey Cave” (houtong, 猴洞), a name derived from the wild monkeys that once inhabited caves in the surrounding hills. During the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century, rich coal deposits were discovered and developed, rapidly turning Houtong into one of northern Taiwan’s
