The frigid Alaskan backcountry will echo with the yips and yowls of sled dogs for two weeks as 82 mushers race their teams across 1,800km of desolate tundra, jagged mountains and wind-swept sea ice.
Few will be there to hear them. And, unless it's a question of life or death, nobody can help them along the way.
Billed as the Last Great Race, the Iditarod covers about half the distance of the Tour de France with none of the amenities and few of the cheering crowds.

Over about nine to 20 days, racers will pass through just 20 checkpoints, three of which are uninhabited the rest of the year, and most of which have less than a few dozen residents.
Winning teams will run about 220km a day, mushing well into the night by the light of the moon, stars and a head lamp.
They will race through blinding snow storms, thick forests and across frozen rivers where temperatures are routinely around 40 below and the wind can whip it down to a bone-chilling minus 90 degrees.
More people have climbed Mount Everest than finished the Iditarod. Just 617 teams have made it from Anchorage to Nome and many of those teams were led by Iditarod veterans.
About half the dogs will get sick or injured and will have to be flown to safety. Several of the mushers will end up giving up somewhere along the way as exhaustion sets in or the problems pile up.
Some teams have fallen through the ice into rushing rivers. Others have been attacked by moose. Frostbite is common, and hypothermia is a constant concern. (AFP)

The US-Israeli war with Iran, which began on Feb. 28, has killed thousands of people, destabilized the Middle East and rocked global energy markets by effectively closing the strait. WHAT IS THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ? Lying between Oman and Iran and linking the Gulf north of it with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond, the strait is 33km wide at its narrowest point, with a shipping lane just 3km wide in either direction. Perhaps the world’s most important energy shipping channel, the waterway is about 167km long. Following through on an old threat, Tehran effectively closed the strait
Have you ever found yourself desperately feeding coins into a claw machine just because you’ve already spent so much trying to win that stuffed animal? Or maybe you’ve continued watching a boring movie simply because you already paid for the ticket? If so, you’ve experienced the “sunk cost fallacy.” A sunk cost refers to time, money or effort that has already been spent and cannot be recovered. This psychological trap is surprisingly common. You might keep playing a video game you no longer enjoy because you’ve invested countless hours in building your character, or maintain a toxic friendship because you’ve known
