Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密) said yesterday that it is set to drive the development of HTML5-based Web technology as part of its cloud computing business strategy.
HTML5 is the fifth revision of the hypertext markup language (HTML) standard used for creating Web pages and multimedia content that can be displayed in a Web browser.
Hon Hai is hoping to build an industry exchange platform and an ecosystem in Taiwan for HTML5 technology from next year, Young Liu (劉揚偉), general manager of the Foxconn Innovation Digital System Business Group, told a forum in Taipei on HTML5 trends.
Liu said local companies should work together to adapt to a shift to an HTML5-based industry environment from the traditional PC-based ecosystem.
Hon Hai executives said the company plans to set up the world’s largest research and development center for HTML5 applications in the Kaohsiung Software Technology Park, for which Hon Hai aims to hire between 2,000 and 3,000 software professionals in addition to the 500 to 1,000 already based in New Taipei City (新北市).
The Smart Network System Institute under the state-funded Institute for Information Industry (資策會) said at the forum that HTML5 is expected to become a mainstream cross-platform standard for Web apps.
Many features of HTML5 have been built to run on low-power devices such as smartphones.
