    Malaysia to scrutinize festive imports

    AP, KUALA LUMPUR

Malaysia will step up checks to ensure that Chinese festive food imports ranging from Mandarin oranges to waxed duck are safe for consumption ahead of the Lunar New Year next month, a news report said yesterday.

Health officers will destroy any food found to be contaminated or order it sent back to the place of origin, Health Ministry Director General Ismail Merican told the Star newspaper.

Authorities will focus on food that might have pesticide and chemical residues, such as Mandarin oranges, mushrooms, fish, waxed duck, seaweed, honey and preserved fruits and vegetables, the report added.

Malaysia imports US$680 million worth of food from China annually, it said.
