Taiwan Society president Chang Yen-hsien (張炎憲) has been hospitalized in the US after having a heart attack, causing concern among friends and colleagues.

Chang, 68, was visiting the US for an interview on oral history.

Chang is on extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation life support. His condition turned critical yesterday, before improving, reports from the US say.

National Taipei University of Education (NTUE) professor Lee Hsiao-feng (李筱峰), who works in the university’s Graduate School of Taiwanese Culture, yesterday said he hopes Chang will recover, adding that Chang has contributed greatly to Taiwan’s academic, education and social activity.

Having also taught at Fu Jen Catholic University, Soochow University and National Central University, Chang has many fomer students across Taiwan, many of whom also left messages online expressing hope he would recover.

The greatest contribution Chang has made is the collection and research of Taiwanese sovereignty at Academia Historica, which he made his primary focus when he became head of the institute in 2000, Lee said.

The work brought to light many incidents and cases that were taboo, such as many that happened during the White Terror era, Lee said.
