By Jimmy Chuang  /  STAFF REPORTER

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday announced the nation’s second Tamiflu-resistant case of A(H1N1) influenza, while another 14 patients were reported to be hospitalized.

“There is no evidence to show that this case is related to the first one, which was discovered last week,” Department of Health Deputy Minister Chang Shan-chwen (張上淳) told a press conference at the CDC yesterday.

He said the victim was a 44-year-old man from Taipei. In addition to swine flu, he was also suffering from pneumonia.

Chang said that 40 Tamiflu-resistant cases of swine flu have been discovered worldwide. More than two Tamiflu-resistant virus cases had been discovered in the US, the UK, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan at press time yesterday.

He added that the CDC has 960,000 doses of Relenza, an alternative medicine to Tamiflu, in stock in the event of more Tamiflu-resistant cases being discovered.
