Several Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) delegates yesterday urged the party to postpone two major party elections and focus its energy on disaster relief.
“The nation is facing a major disaster. Since the government has canceled the National Day celebrations, the party headquarters should also put off elections for the KMT Party Congress on Sept. 12,” Lai Li-chu (賴立竹), a KMT delegate, told a press conference at the legislature.
Yeh Yuan-chih (葉元之), another delegate, said many candidates running for the central committee and for seats on the party’s Central Standing Committee had been preoccupied with disaster relief in southern Taiwan.
Delegates had been unable to get to know candidates well because party headquarters had canceled campaign activities after the typhoon, Yeh said.
The party is also scheduled to hold an election for its decision-making body, the Central Standing Committee, on Sept 6.
In response, KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄) said yesterday the elections will be held according to the original plan, but urged candidates to keep a low profile in completing the election process as the nation was focusing on rescue and relief work.
