The Control Yuan yesterday issued “corrective measures” against the Taipei County Government and the Council of Cultural Affairs (CCA) over their preservation policies for Losheng Sanatorium (樂生療養院).
The Taipei County Government and the CCA were charged by the Control Yuan with neglect of cultural heritage and lacking effective measures to preserve Losheng.
The Control Yuan said the county government had for years delayed completion of a review that could have designated the sanatorium as a historical site, in spite of numerous requests by groups and cultural experts.
The council was found to have failed to urge the county to adopt effective measures to preserve the site.
Located in Sinjhuang City (新莊), Losheng was built during the Japanese colonial period.
A large part of the sanatorium’s grounds are being demolished to make way for a Mass Rapid Transit maintenance depot.

A 79-year-old woman died today after being struck by a train at a level crossing in Taoyuan, police said. The woman, identified by her surname Wang (王), crossed the tracks even though the barriers were down in Jhongli District’s (中壢) Neili (內壢) area, the Taoyuan Branch of the Railway Police Bureau said. Surveillance footage showed that the railway barriers were lowered when Wang entered the crossing, but why she ventured onto the track remains under investigation, the police said.
