A 10-month-old girl in Changhua County yesterday sustained second-degree burns over 90 percent of her body after her father threw her into a pot of boiling water during a fight with his girlfriend.
As of press time, the girl was still in critical condition in intensive care after being sent to the emergency room at Changhua Christian Hospital.
The man, surnamed Huang, 47, has been arrested for attempted murder.
Reports said the man threw the girl into the pot of boiling water during an argument with his girlfriend after she challenged him do so.
Witnesses said the couple have had a rocky relationship since they started living together 12 years ago. The man frequently came home drunk, they said.
The couple runs a noodle shop and often has pots of boiling water around. They have three children together, a neighbor said.
It was reported that the mother immediately scooped the girl out of the pot and rinsed her body with cold tap water. She did not realize the severity of the burns until she tried to lift up the girl’s dress and saw that her skin had meshed together with the clothes.
By the time the ambulance came, the girl had blisters all over her back and some of the skin on her arms and legs was peeling off, a police officer said.
