The office of president-elect Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) announced yesterday that former Taichung County commissioner Liao Liao-yi (廖了以) will be the new minister of the interior.
Liao’s nomination fills the post left vacant after the untimely death of Liao Fung-te (廖風德) on Saturday.
Liao Fung-te died of heart and lung failure after collapsing during a hike. He was 57.
Having served as director of the KMT’s organization and development committee, Liao Fung-te also helped the party win legislative and presidential elections before he was chosen to lead the Ministry of the Interior.
Liao Liao-yi had been named deputy minister of interior, and had met with Liao Feng-te several times to discuss ministerial affairs before Liao Fung-te’s sudden death.
Liao Liao-yi was the director of Ma’s Taichung County support group and was responsible for arranging Ma’s schedule in the area during the president-elect’s nationwide campaign tour.
He was the mayor of Taichung County’s Fengyuan City before being elected Taichung County commissioner.
Ma’s office yesterday also announced that Coast Guard Administration Minister Wang Chin-wang (王進旺) will remain in the post.
