Police haul in fake Wang Chien-ming Yankee products

HARD TO TELL The Intellectual Property Rights Police Team found forgeries so good, they were impossible to identify just by looking

Police seized a haul of counterfeit New York Yankees clothing bearing the name and number of popular pitcher Wang Chien-ming (王建民), it was reported yesterday.

The National Police Agency's Intellectual Property Rights Police Team (IPRPT) said in a press statement yesterday that as Wang, who plays for US Major League Baseball's (MLB) New York Yankees, is very popular around the nation, an increasing amount of fake Wang Chien-ming Yankees clothing is appearing on the market.

The IPRPT added that its officers are patrolling night markets and sports shops nationwide to crackdown on fake MLB apparel.

The IPRPT said officers last week found a popular shop at a night market in Shiquan Rd in Kaoshiung, selling a lot of Wang clothing and other Yankees clothes, but they were not sure whether those goods were fake.

Police said they bought a couple of items of clothing and took them back to their laboratory for examination where they discovered the clothes were fakes.

Police said, however, the material and labels used in the fakes look like the real thing, and even the MLB counterfeit agents could not tell they were fake using the naked eye.

Police added many of the fakes are the latest lines of Yankees clothes.
