The Council of Agriculture yesterday agreed to consider purchasing more bananas to assist farmers.
The council was responding to a call by a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker and banana growers in Tainan County.
DPP Legislator Huang Wei-cher (黃偉哲) said that while the council's purchase period for bananas had ended last month, harvesting had continued. He urged the council to extend the purchase period lest the price collapse because of a glut.
Wu Su-pin (吳泗濱), a section chief at the council's Agriculture and Food Agency, said banana production had increased 20 percent since last year.
The council has bought more than 9,000 tonnes of bananas of inferior quality to assist farmers.
With the end of the council's purchases, the price of bananas has gone into free fall.
