The age-old argument that the tax bill or traffic fine got lost in the mail is about to become obsolete, as the government plans to send bills and payment reminders by e-mail and mobile phone, an official said yesterday. The service, to be inaugurated by December, will alert citizens to pay their bills and tickets before they are due by integrating various government Web sites, said Shih Nen-chieh, a Cabinet official in charge of planning and research. The service is the latest manifestation of a 10-year project to put government services and information online, Shih said. "It is one of the government reforms that cost little but has generated great public satisfaction," he said in a statement. In a report this year, the Geneva-based World Economic Forum listed Taiwan's online government service as the world's fourth-most widely used, after Singapore, Denmark and Estonia. Almost all local and central government agencies have Web sites with updated information for the public.
