Steve Chen, the local boy that created YouTube

The co-founder of YouTube, 27-year-old Steve Chen (陳士駿), left Taiwan for the US during his first year in high school.

After completing high school, Chen attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana before becoming an employee of Paypal, where he met future YouTube partners Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim.

Chen and Hurley were at a dinner party in January last year when they realized there was no easy way to share online video, the way people can with photos.

At the time, they were both between jobs and carrying substantial credit card debt. They founded YouTube in February.

The website was officially launched in December 2005. Since then, the service has grown rapidly in popularity.
