Former US senator Claiborne Pell will be decorated with the Order of Propitious Clouds with Grand Cordon in recognition of his contributions to Taiwan's political democratization. Taiwan's representative to Washington David Lee (李大維) will present Pell with the medal on behalf of President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) at a ceremony to be held today at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, a official from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office said. Pell, who had served in the US Congress for 36 years and engaged in research into Taiwan affairs for many years at Columbia University, has always paid great heed to Taiwan's democratic development and human rights issues, the official said.
South Korean K-pop girl group Blackpink are to make Kaohsiung the first stop on their Asia tour when they perform at Kaohsiung National Stadium on Oct. 18 and 19, the event organizer said yesterday. The upcoming performances will also make Blackpink the first girl group ever to perform twice at the stadium. It will be the group’s third visit to Taiwan to stage a concert. The Taiwan High Court yesterday upheld a lower court’s decision that ruled in favor of former president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) regarding the legitimacy of her doctoral degree.
