Taiwan Quick Take: Suicide rate rises further

    Sunday, Jul 02, 2006, Page 3

The nation's suicide rate continued to rise last year, with 4,282 people killing themselves, up 814 from 2004 and averaging about 11.7 suicides per day or one suicide every two hours, a government report said yesterday. Last year's total was also equivalent to 18.8 suicides per every 100,000 people, the Department of Health said in its annual mortality report. The majority of the suicides were committed by men, especially those in the 25-64 age group. Unemployment was the main reason behind the suicides, but sociologists also blamed isolation, work pressure, depression and the lack of suicide-prevention networks for the rise in the nation's suicide rate.
