Sentences upheld for nurses who gave wrong shots

    By Jimmy Chuang

Two nurses who accidentally injected seven babies with anesthetic instead of hepatitis vaccine lost an appeal against their sentences yesterday.

The Taiwan High Court upheld a Panchiao District Court judgement on May 22 that sentenced Huang Ching-hui (¶À¹t´f) to two years in prison and Lee Mei-yun (§õ¬ü¶³) to 18 months. Lee's sentence was suspended for five years.

The two nurses at Taipei County's Peicheng Hospital for Women and Children have no further avenue for appeal.

"Of the seven babies, one of them died and another six suffered from heart failure, lung failure and other breathing difficulties," said Tsai Kuo-tsai (½²°ê¦b), the Taiwan High Court spokesman.

"The judges believed that the two nurses must be responsible for this so they decided to uphold the original verdict," Tsai said.

The shots were mistakenly given to the babies on Nov. 29 last year.
