Ma won the mayoral race four years ago by a narrow margin over Chen. Ma's victory was partly attributed to Lee Teng-hui's support, who was then president and KMT chairman.
The retired president, however, has switched his support to Lee Ying-yuan and publicly expressed disappointment over Ma's record.
In April, several TSU members attempted to persuade Annie Lee to run for Taipei mayor, but she rejected the idea.
"We need a better mayor. I am really looking for changes in our city," Annie Lee said at that time.

Starting on Jan. 1, YouBike riders must have insurance to use the service, and a six-month trial of NT$5 coupons under certain conditions would be implemented to balance bike shortages, a joint statement from transportation departments across Taipei, New Taipei City and Taoyuan announced yesterday. Temperatures are forecast to drop steadily as a continental cold air mass moves across Taiwan, with some areas also likely to see heavy rainfall, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
