Annie Lee supports Lee Ying-yuan for Taipei mayoral post

By Tsai Ting-I  /  STAFF REPORTER

Former president Lee Teng-hui's (李登輝) daughter Annie Lee (李安妮) announced yesterday that she would campaign for the DPP's Taipei mayoral candidate Lee Ying-yuan (李應元).

The news is viewed as an indication of the TSU's approval of Lee Ying-yuan's candidacy since Lee Teng-hui is the spiritual leader of the young party.

Annie Lee made the announcement yesterday while visiting Lee Ying-yuan, who is running against incumbent mayor and KMT candidate, Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九).

"Nothing has really changed in the past four years. The incumbent mayor hasn't made any changes [for the better] to this city, which is totally different from four years ago," said Annie Lee, referring to President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) time in the post.

Annie Lee and Laura Huang (黃月桂), Lee Ying-yuan's wife, will depart Friday for the US on a three-day campaign trip. They are scheduled to attend rallies organized by Lee Ying-yuan's overseas supporters in San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Ma won the mayoral race four years ago by a narrow margin over Chen. Ma's victory was partly attributed to Lee Teng-hui's support, who was then president and KMT chairman.

The retired president, however, has switched his support to Lee Ying-yuan and publicly expressed disappointment over Ma's record.

In April, several TSU members attempted to persuade Annie Lee to run for Taipei mayor, but she rejected the idea.

"We need a better mayor. I am really looking for changes in our city," Annie Lee said at that time.
