Taiwanese No. 1 Lu Yen-hsun has qualified for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association said on Saturday.
The association said in a statement that it had received confirmation from the International Tennis Federation that Lu has qualified for the men’s singles tournament at this year’s Olympic Games.
If Lu plays in Rio de Janeiro in August, it will be his fourth consecutive appearance at the Games.
Lu improved his ATP Tour ranking to the 78th on June 13 after winning the grass-court Surbiton Challenger in England, his first title of the year.
He missed most of the first four months of the season after having surgery on his elbow, but he has reached the final of three of the four ATP Challenger events he has entered since his return to competitive tennis last month.
Lu’s qualification for the Olympics brings the number of Taiwanese athletes eligible to compete in Rio to 50, reaching the government’s target.
Sports Administration Competitive Athletics Division head Hung Chih-chang said earlier this year that the nation’s goal was to send at least 50 athletes to Rio de Janeiro.
As of Saturday, Taiwanese athletes have qualified for to compete in the archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, equestrian, gymnastics, judo, rowing, shooting, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo, wrestling and tennis, the Sports Administration said.
The agency forecast that Taiwanese athletes might also qualify for additional spots in this year’s Games in swimming and golf.
In 2012, 44 Taiwanese athletes competed in the London Olympics, bringing home a silver medal in weightlifting and a bronze in taekwondo.

It was payback after the Belarusian Sabalenka won the 2023 final between two of the hardest hitters in women’s tennis. The ice-cool Rybakina, 26, who was born in Moscow, adds her Melbourne triumph to her Wimbledon win in 2022. It was more disappointment in a major final for Sabalenka, who won the US Open
