Taiwan fell behind 2-1 against Pakistan on the second day of their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II playoff at the Ulusal Tenis Egitim Merkezi Tennis Club in Izmir, Turkey, yesterday.
Taiwan’s bid for promotion back to Asia/Oceania Group I next year will rely on the team winning both today’s reverse singles after Wang Chieh-fu and Jimmy Wang lost their doubles match 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Pakistan’s Ageel Khan and and Aisam Qureshi.
That means that Jimmy Wang must beat Khan and Hung Jui-chen then topple Samir Iftikhar in today’s reverse singles rubbers for Taiwan to win promotion back to Group I following last year’s relegation.
On Friday, the teams shared the honors in the opening singles rubbers, with Ageel Khan defeating Hung 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 and Jimmy Wang crushing Iftikhar 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.
