John Isner needed 33 aces and two-and-a-half hours, outlasting Gilles Muller at the Atlanta Tennis Championships as the American registered his first win since making history at Wimbledon.
Marathon man Isner beat an inspired Muller 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (9/7) on Wednesday, lifting his career record in final-set tiebreakers to 16-5.
“I didn’t want to let the fans down,” Isner said. “I didn’t want to lose my first match here. I had a lot of friends and family here, so I didn’t want to go out early. I felt I was shedding the rust off in the second and third sets. I will only keep getting better. This was one of the biggest wins of the year.”

Muller, ranked 206, turned in a miracle performance for a player who missed the last half of last year with injury and was playing in only his second event at the ATP level after Queen’s last month. The outsider fired 29 aces, just four less than Isner.
Isner, who is seeded second, won the longest match in tennis history last month at Wimbledon, 70-68 in the fifth set over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, who has forever lost his label of anonymity after the 11-hour epic over three days, but Isner doesn’t want to live in the past after discussing his huge victory for weeks now.
“I’m ranked in the top 20, I think I can still improve and keep climbing,” the No. 19 said. “My goal is to reach the top 10 and contend at the really big events.”
Taylor Dent of the US reached his first quarter-final in half a decade, staging a comeback to upset fourth seed Horacio Zeballos 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Dent, 29, who is 94th-ranked in the world, is slowly rebuilding his career after back surgery several seasons ago.
His progress so far is his best since coming back to tennis in late 2008. He advanced past a second round for the first time this season.
Michael Russell of the US won a battle of the oldest players in the field as the 32-year-old staged a comeback over German Rainer Schuettler, 34, to advance 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Bacsinszky will play Sandra Zahlavova for a place in the semi-finals. The Czech defeated Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko 6-2, 6-4.
No. 8 seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia also advanced after Simona Halep of Romania pulled out with a right shoulder injury when Sevastova led 5-7, 6-1, 5-0.
Sevastova next plays a former Gastein Ladies finalist — either Yvonne Meusburger (2007) or Lucie Hradecka (2008).
Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia defeated Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 after rallying from a break down in the decider three times.

Hercog defeated compatriot Katarina Srebotnik 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3.
A runner who stopped during a marathon in China to pose doing the splits and another who hoarded energy gels have been banned for two years, the local athletics association said yesterday. The incidents happened during Sunday’s marathon in Sichuan Province’s Chengdu and were widely shared online. Videos showed a female runner stopping suddenly and dropping to the ground in the splits position, holding up her arms in a heart shape as she apparently posed for a photograph. She “committed obstructive fouls during the race, affecting the safe participation of other runners,” the Sichuan Athletics Association said in a statement, which identified
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah on Tuesday said that he would leave the English club at the end of the Premier League season, marking an earlier-than-planned departure for one of the club’s greatest-ever scorers and soccer’s biggest names. The 33-year-old Egypt forward, who has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances for Liverpool, “reached an agreement” to quit the team a year before his contract was due to expire, the Premier League champions said. Salah’s form has dipped in his ninth year at Anfield, to such an extent that he was dropped for a stretch of games late last year — leading to the
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli yesterday vowed to “keep raising the bar” after winning the Japanese Grand Prix to become the youngest driver in Formula One history to lead the championship standings. The 19-year-old Italian took advantage of a mid-race safety car to jump into the lead after a dreadful start from pole position, crossing the line ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Antonelli’s Suzuka victory came two weeks after the first grand prix win of his career in China, and sent him top of the championship standings after three races, nine points ahead of team-mate George Russell. Mercedes are struggling to
There were some big games to be played yesterday in the NBA, with the Atlanta Hawks to play the Detroit Pistons in a matchup pitting a Hawks team who are rolling against a Pistons team trying to lock up the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed. The Oklahoma City Thunder were to play the Boston Celtics, a showdown featuring the two most recent champions, while the Houston Rockets faced the Minnesota Timberwolves, a game that could factor mightily into Western Conference seeding. Elsewhere, the Washington Wizards were to play the Utah Jazz, with the Wizards on a 16-game slide visiting against a team
