The mascot for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games is named “Vinicius”; the mascot for the Paralympic Games, “Tom.” They were chosen as the names in honor of two Brazilian music legends, Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim.
After an online vote that attracted 323,327 public votes, the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games announced the names for their respective mascots. “Vinicius” is a bright yellow animal representing Brazil’s rich wildlife; “Tom” is a blue and green plant symbolizing the host country’s massive rainforests.
The Rio Olympic Games opened on Aug. 5 (Aug. 6 Taiwan time). They are the first Olympic Games to be held in South America. A total of 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are competing in the event.

According to US Sports Illustrated magazine’s medal predictions on its Web site, Taiwan is expected to win one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals this time, in archery, shooting, taekwondo and weightlifting.
