The Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County attracts tourists from all over the world, but because many areas are covered in primeval forest, tourists often become lost. Recently two US nationals traveled to the rarely visited Cikong Waterfall in Manjhou Township, where they encountered a large pack of wild dogs. The dogs chased after the tourists, who were so frightened that they climbed up a tree to get away from the frenzied canines and called the police, who arrived on the scene to rescue the besieged tourists.
“We originally thought they were a pack of wolves, but then we realized there can’t be any wolves in Taiwan.” The badly shaken American couple told the police that they wanted to do something different from most tourists, who usually go to the beach and do water sports. Consulting a tourist map, they found the Cikong Waterfall. At the beginning the views were beautiful and the waterfall was stunning, but they could not have imagined the nightmare that lay in store for them when they descended the mountain that evening.
When they retraced their steps to the entrance of the waterfall they were shocked to hear a low growling sound coming from a pack of animals. Due to the murky dusk light, they initially thought packs of wolves must roam the mountainous regions of Taiwan — until, that is, the animals came close to them, barking furiously. It was then that they realized the animals were in fact a pack of fierce wild dogs. The couple originally planned to leave the area by bypassing the dogs but were caught off-guard when the dogs rushed forward to chase after them. Petrified, they took to their heels and sought refuge by climbing up a nearby acacia tree from which they called the police for help.

When police sergeant Tsai Chih-ming and officer Hsieh Hung-ju from Manjhou Township Police Station arrived at the scene, they discovered the pack of dogs were still encircling the tree and barking. The two policemen hurriedly broke up the pack and rescued the couple, putting an end to this unusual case of tourists getting trapped.

Taiwanese cuisine boasts a rich culture of thick soups, with various options available at street vendors or high-end restaurants. In English, this style of dish is typically called “thick soup.” Western cuisine typically uses flour, cream, or mashed vegetables to create a creamy consistency, while in Taiwan, thick soups are made by simply incorporating food starch into the soup and creating a smooth and silky texture. Tutuo fish in thick soup is such a soup with fried tutuo fish chunks, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and wood ears. boast (v.) The star of this
Huge stretches of coral reef around the world are turning a ghostly white this year amid record warm ocean temperatures. On April 15, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed the world’s fourth mass global bleaching event is underway — with serious consequences for marine life and for the people and economies that rely on reefs. WHAT ARE CORALS? Corals are invertebrates that live in colonies. Their calcium carbonate secretions form hard and protective scaffolding that serves as a home to many colorful species of single-celled algae. The two organisms have evolved over millennia to work together, with corals providing shelter to algae,
In Taiwan, a quick stop at a local convenience store allows you to grab a hot dog whenever you want. But have you ever wondered how this popular snack got its unique name and became a leading light of American cuisine? First, the name “hot dog” is actually a combination of different ideas. Vendors called the sausages “red hot” to get customers to buy one fresh off their grills. As for the “dog” part, it’s a playful joke to compare the meat of the sausage to that of a dog—specifically , a dachshund. This small, long dog breed was
