Tuesday last week saw two fires in a row break out in Kaohsiung. In the morning a house caught fire and a 65-year-old man surnamed Huang got trapped on the second floor until he was rescued. Luckily he was not badly injured and was able to seek medical treatment by himself.
Three tin-roofed sheds belonging to a woodwork factory behind the fruit and vegetable market that lies next to the 50-storey Chang-Gu World Trade Center building were burned down by a fire that is suspected to have been caused by careless burning of weeds. A large quantity of plywood boards and finished and semi-finished cupboards were burned to a cinder. Luckily nobody was injured, and a little dog belonging to the owner was rescued after hiding in a cupboard.
The police said that a fire broke out on a vacant lot next to the market at about 10.30am, with flames spreading everywhere and casting a pall of smoke. A fish vendor surnamed Chen who witnessed the fire said that flames suddenly appeared in an orchard behind the corrugated steel sheds. He and a friend picked up fire extinguishers and rushed over to put out the fire, but they were cut off by the boundary wall and could not get close to it. At that moment, they saw an elderly man standing next to the burning weeds and dry sticks. Seeing that the fire was spreading and burning out of control, the old man took fright and ran away.

The factory owner, whose surname is Hsu, was resting in one of the factory buildings when the fire broke out. Hearing shouts of “Fire,” he rushed outside, then rushed back in again to salvage valuable items. When firefighters entered the scene to put out the fire, they found a little dog hiding in a cupboard in the smoke-filled factory building and immediately picked it up and carried it outside.

Let’s explore another delicacy primarily known to Tainan locals: floating milkfish in thick soup. Despite its peculiar name, this dish is another Tainan specialty that showcases the popularity of milkfish, which is made into fish paste and served in thick soup. Unlike the version with tutuo fish, which also adds other ingredients to its thick soup, the floating milkfish version primarily features the “floating fish” itself in its thick soup, ensuring that the fish paste remains the star of the dish. peculiar (adj.) 獨特的;古怪的 The belly of a milkfish is considered the most
